This is the first in a series of 15 pamphlets based on the 1981 Permaculture Design Course given by Bill Mollison at The Rural Education Center, Wilton, New Hampshire, USA. Elizabeth Beyor, without compensation, transcribed tape recordings of the course and subsequently edited them into the 15 pamphlets. Thelma Snell typed all 15 pamphlets and laid-out most of them. Lisa Barnes contributed illustrations to pamphlets II, IX, and XI. Bill Mollison edited the pamphlets for accuracy and style, as did I, their publisher, Dan Hemenway. I also performed computer typesetting for this edition. After about 10 years of using Thelma's typescript, we were able to offer a typeset version, which is at once more compact, saving trees and money, and more readable. Now we also offer the pamphlets in electronic form, so that they may be read directly by computer without use of any paper, saving more trees. This edition has been slightly re-edited to make it more readable, accurate, and up-to-date.

This is the definitive Permaculture design manual in print since 1988.
It is the text book and curriculum for the 72-hour Certificate course
in Permaculture Design. Written for teachers, students and designers,
it follows on and greatly enlarges on the initial introductory texts,
Permaculture One (1978) and Permaculture Two (1979) both of which are
still in demand over twenty years after publication.
Very little of
the material found in this book is reproduced from the former texts.
It covers design methodologies and strategies for both urban and rural
applications describing property design and natural farming
techniques.

Natural farming is based on the observation of nature and allowing it to do what it naturally does best.
Born in a small farming village on the island of Shikoku in Southern
Japan in 1914, Masanobu Fukuoka was trained in microbiology as a plant
pathologist. His career began as an agriculture customs inspector
running tests on incoming and outgoing plants at the port of Yokohama.
At twenty-five, he started to question what he had learned about
modern agriculture science, and came to accept that all the
accomplishments of human progress are insignificant before the totality
of nature.
Fukuoka has learned how plants can grow naturally and vigorously with
little or no human effort. For over fifty years he has achieved surplus
yields of rice, barley, plums, citrus fruits and vegetables by means of
natural farming. Fukuoka's methods have also been used to green the
deserts, with the use of seed balls.
